Invest in Energy & Biomass
Hastings County is positioning itself as a rural leader in clean energy, biomass and anergy storage investment. With abundant forest resources, available industrial lands, grid-connected infrastructure and supportive municipal partners, the County offers opportunities for projects that support energy transition, local job creation and long-term community resilience.
Potential Investment Properties
Hastings County works with local municipalities and private landowners to identify industrial and rural employment lands suitable for energy, biomass and storage projects. Opportunities include lands with proximity to transmission infrastructure, forestry supply chains and transportation corridors.

Current Business Examples
The County is home to forestry operators and rural industries that are interested in supporting biomass supply chains and renewable energy development, forming a strong base for expanded clean-energy investment. The Bancroft Minden Forest Company recently completed a report outlining the underutilized fibre supply in our region. The full report can be found here.
As outlined in the report, each year local sawmills produce roughly 323,000 Bone Dry Metric Tonne (BDMT) of wood residuals, with the potential to exceed 500,000 BDMT as mills expand. At the same time, forest operations generate close to 1 million m³ of unused low grade wood, much of it previously used by the former Cascades mill in Trenton.
This available fibre is more than enough to support major biomass and district energy projects. Even today’s supply could power a 27–32 MW biomass plant, heat an entire community, or fuel a 15–20 MW combined heat and power system creating reliable, renewable energy while reducing waste and supporting local economic growth.
Battery Storage Projects (Centre Hastings BESS Project)
Hastings County recognizes the electricity demand into the future. It is forecast to rise 60% by 2050. The Independent Electricity Operator (IES)) also recommends 5,000 MW of new electricity resources be procured by 2034. The County recognizes that companies are exploring our region to locate their energy generation equipment. As an example, the Centre Hastings Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project, which supports grid stability and future renewable generation, is under development. https://hydromega.com/en/centre-hastings/
