9-1-1 is the emergency telephone number that links callers to emergency police, fire or ambulance services. Call only during an emergency where people or property are at risk (a fire, rescue, crime in progress or a medical crisis). Calls are free from any pay phone. Remain calm and answer all questions you may be asked. Do not hang up until the operator tells you to do so.
If you call 9-1-1 by accident, stay on the line until the operator answers to verify there is no emergency. If you hang up before the call is answered the police will call you back and, if they do not get an answer, they will attend the address to verify the situation
