Description
Land’escapes is a private organization, working to protect and conserve land in south-central Ontario and provide a place for people to connect with nature through low-impact recreation. We are currently looking to hire an awesome 2023 team of rangers to help in developing and operating a 26,000 acre park. In this role you will spend your summer camping, hiking and scouting! An interest in conservation and love of the outdoors will align with our team and organizational values.
These positions require individuals to work outdoors, camping up to 5 days a week, hiking, scouting, building trails and doing manual labour in all weather conditions. An interest in conservation and a love of the outdoors will align with our team and organizational values.
Housing: Staff are expected to camp in the field on a regular basis. For non-camping days we do have some basic on-site shared staff accommodation options available. Please ask for more information if you need accommodation.
Wage: $1,380 – $1,600 paid bi-weekly depending on skills and experience. In addition to wages, employees will be provided with uniforms and gear for fieldwork. Staff are expected to provide their own personal camping gear and all food. We will provide employees with a detailed list of any gear that they are required to provide themselves.
General Duties and Responsibilities:
- Scouting, building, and clearing trails and portage routes in remote locations
- Distributing canoes
- Entirely constructing and creating excellent campsites to a high standard
- Maintaining existing campsites and re-opening them after winter
- Daily use of hand saws, motorized brush saws, axes, rakes, shovels etc. – maintaining and safely storing this equipment
- Building simple structures from a template (such as thunderboxes)
- Assisting with Hunt camp demolition and land restoration, this includes; lots of garbage removal and transplanting trees for remediation
- Installing fencing and signage
- Friendly and helpful to park visitors
- Gatehouse duties; prepping, cleaning gear, greeting visitors.
- Daily use of the Avenza app on your personal phone for mapping and navigation.
This position requires that applicants:
- Are prepared to camp 2-3 nights weekly, occasionally up to 4 nights per week.
- Ability to adapt to a changing environment and handle multiple priorities.
- Comfortable being in remote locations.
- Confident in doing remote tasks independently.
- Be physically able – applicants will need to work outdoors in a variety of environmental conditions and be able to lift more than 20 lbs regularly (garbage, metal, logs, etc.) and up to 70 lbs pack weights. Routine tasks include hiking rough terrain, –carrying gear and doing manual labour.
- Comfortable and capable of operating small machinery and equipment.
- Capable of driving trucks & side by sides
- Strong verbal communications skills and an outgoing personality as there will be daily interaction with other Land’escapes employees, outside contractors and our various user groups of the property.
- Customer service – rangers will be in contact with park visitors. It is expected that they are friendly and helpful. This may include answering questions about the Park, helping with navigation or gear and generally improving the quality of their visit.
- Front gate attendants – rangers will be required to occasionally take on front gate duties which will include preparing gear for upcoming trips, welcoming visitors, cleaning and organizing used gear and general maintenance tasks at the front gate area.
- Attention to detail – the applicant will be acting as our eyes and ears on the project site, so the ability to notice areas that need attention and take initiative will be important in this role.
- Be punctual and have good time management – need to arrive at the park site at the scheduled times and may have multiple locations within the park to visit within a single day.
- Can follow and understand mapping apps and software to both find remote work areas, and mark notable points. Prior knowledge of specific programs is not required, but familiarity with smartphones, map navigation and basic computer skills are necessary.
- Be comfortable and capable of camping in remote locations to complete tasks.
- Have a strong ability to act with integrity, credibility, and self-confidence.
- Can work independently and within a team.
Requirements & Certifications
- Have a G2 driver’s license or higher
- Basic First Aid Certification required prior to start date
- Wilderness First Aid would be considered a strong asset
- Competent swimming ability
- Backcountry camping and some canoeing experience
Start date option 1: Full Time; Full season March – End of September
Start date option 2: Full Time; Part season April/ May – Beginning of September
If you are the right person for a Senior role you will have experience in backcountry camping and canoeing and have previous experience working in roles that required fieldwork and physical labour.
