Celebrate International GIS Day on November 16th

NOVEMBER 16th is INTERNATIONAL GIS DAY!  Please celebrate with the County GIS staff and explore new and innovative ways the County is using mapping technology to enhance a better understanding of the community.

We are having an Open House on NOVEMBER 16th from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm in the Planning & Development office boardroom, located on the first floor of the County Administration building at 235 Pinnacle Street, Belleville.  There will be maps and displays plus some free giveaways.

The County of Hastings GIS has been actively developing new and innovative web-based mapping applications available to the general public.  In addition to a wide variety of PDF maps that can be downloaded, saved and printed, a new cloud-based platform called ArcGIS Online (AGOL) has been in development since the beginning of 2016 and added to the selection of map viewers.  These online applications are built on the existing GIS framework of sophisticated software and hardware, and then delivered to its audience, the general public, via a web-based viewer.

Examples of public online map viewers include:

  • Desktop/laptop version of Public Community Online Maps that highlight community information such as land parcels, road information, 9-1-1 civic addresses, colour aerial photography, and general location information
  • Mobile versions of the Public Community Online Maps that can run on tablets and smartphones, and providing the same information as above.
  • Interactive Arts Route map highlighting artists in the County
  • Scenic Routes interactive map being developed with North Hastings Economic Development Committee, highlighting multiple routes
  • Conservation Authority Boundary map for the County and surrounding regions.

The County GIS has also released a new home page, called “GIS Products and Services”, to act as a one-stop launch pad for online applications.  The link to the new page can be found on the County GIS web page (www.hastingsnavigator.ca).
